The Letter of No Objection is a statement confirming that the exchange visitor's Government has no objection to the applicant:

  • Not returning to the home country to satisfy the two-year foreign residency requirement.
  • Remaining in the U.S. if he or she chooses to do so.

Cost: A fee of US $90 in the form of a money order made payable to "Consulate General of Jamaica" for mailed-in applications or in the form of cash or money order for walk-in applicants. All applications only require one (1) money order.

Steps in the Process

  • The applicant applies for a change of his/her J-1 Visa status at the U.S. Department of State website www.travel.state.gov. The applicant will be given a case number, which is to be referenced in the application to the Consulate General.
  • The applicant's application for the Letter of No Objection, supporting documents and fee are sent to the Consulate General of Jamaica, Miami.
  • Upon receipt of the application, the documents are reviewed, and compliant applications are forwarded to the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service for processing.
  • If the application is non-compliant, the applicant is advised in writing of the necessary actions to be taken.
  • When the application is approved or denied, the Scholarship and Assistance Unit sends written notification to the Consulate.
  • If approved, the Consulate informs the Embassy of Jamaica, Washington, D.C. of the approval and issues the Letter of No Objection, which is then forwarded to the U.S. Department of State.
  • The Consulate notifies the applicant by letter of the approval. The letter will also state that the Embassy of Jamaica, Washington, D.C. has been requested to issue the Letter of No Objection.
  • If denied, the applicant is informed in writing and the necessary steps to take.

General Information

PLEASE NOTE:

  • J-1 Visa Waiver/No Objection clients who require updates on their status will be directed to their respective Consulate/Embassy, in keeping with the instructions issued by the U.S. Department of State (as stated on the barcode page of the DS-2019 form).
  • Delays in the processing of an application may occur due to extended non-response times from other participating entities, over which the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service have no control.
  • The submission of a Letter of No Objection from the Embassy to the U.S. Department of State does not guarantee approval of a waiver application.

If you wish to repatriate your loved one’s remains to Jamaica, whether for burial or after cremation, you should consult the Ministry of Health and Wellness’s Guidelines: Ministry of Health and Wellness’s Guidelines for the Shipment of Human Remains, which outline the applicable requirements and procedures.
