Requirements for the Issuance of a Letter of No Objection
- A written request signed by the applicant and addressed to the Consulate General of Jamaica, 44 West Flagler Street, Suite 400, Miami, FL 33130. The letter must include the reason(s) for the request and state the applicant’s Case Number.
- The Third-Party Barcode Page.
- A copy of the applicant’s Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV) (all employment detail in Jamaica must be stated).
- A notarized copy of the bio-data page of the applicant’s Jamaican passport.
- A notarized copy of the applicant’s Birth Certificate.
- A notarized copy (front & back) of the applicant’s Taxpayer Registration Card (TRN) or Jamaican Driver’s License.
- A notarized copy of the applicant’s Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status.
- Notarized copies of the applicant’s U.S. J‑1 Visa.
- Notarized copy of I‑94 Record.
- Cost: USD $70 (covers mandatory consular fee of $20. Money order payable to the Consulate-General of Jamaica, Miami).

Processing Time
Estimated processing time: 4 – 9 months.
Steps in the Process
- The applicant applies for a change of J‑1 Visa status at the U.S. Department of State website.
- The applicant’s cover letter, supporting documents and fee are sent to the Consulate General of Jamaica, Miami.
- The application is checked for compliance and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance – Scholarship and Assistance Unit, Jamaica.
- If non‑compliant, the applicant is informed in writing.
- The Ministry of Finance issues a list of applicants approved for No Objection.
- A Letter of No Objection is prepared and transmitted to the Embassy of Jamaica, Washington, DC.
- The Consulate notifies the applicant of approval by email.
- Within 5–7 days, the Embassy sends the No Objection confirmation to the U.S. State Department.
- The State Department uploads the confirmation to their system for applicant review.

Please Note:
- Documents requiring pre-certification (e.g., Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Notary Public, JP) must be pre-certified before submitting to the MFA&FT.
- Applicants must complete an Application Form (requisition form) and submit with their documents. Payments are made at the MFA&FT cashier or any Jamaican Embassy/Consulate overseas. Forms may be requested via info@mfaft.gov.jm or authentications@mfaft.gov.jm.
- Fees – Applicants in Jamaica:
JM$3,500 per document (5 business days)
JM$5,000 (24-hour service — verify eligibility)
Apostilled documents may be collected or returned via courier (prepaid envelope required). TRN required. - Overseas Applicants – Fees:
a) USA: US$55
b) Canada: CDN$40
c) UK: £25
d) Europe (non‑UK): €20
e) All others: US$30
Processing: 10–15 business days.

Persons Living Overseas Must Submit:
- Fingerprints (signed and stamped by the police or reputable agency; the name of the person taking fingerprints must be clearly stated).
- Two passport-sized photographs (may be signed but NOT embossed).
- Certified bio-data page of passport.
- If sent by FedEx or DHL, a return label must be provided for return delivery.
- Bank draft or money order made payable to the Commissioner of Police.
Fees
- JMD $3,000 – Regular Service (21 working days)
- JMD $6,000 – Express Service (5 working days)
- JMD $8,000 – Next Day Service (Temporarily Suspended)
Payment Options
Fees may be paid in USD, CAD, GBP, or any note tenable in Jamaica via money order made payable to the Commissioner of Police. Payments may also be made by a third party at a tax office in Jamaica.
How to Send Fingerprints From Abroad
Fingerprints may be sent via courier service, regular mail, or through a third party.
If the applicant does not have a TRN:

Collection
A letter of authorization is required if the police record will be collected by someone other than the applicant. The bearer must present valid identification.
Note: For Police Certificates to be used abroad, the passport is the only accepted form of identification.
